Using Windows Startup To Automatically Launch an application

Using Windows Startup To Automatically Launch an application

Symptoms

  • You want your PC to start a process automatically when the computer is turned on
  • You want to prevent users from accessing Windows.

BACKGROUND
Microsoft Windows has a what is called a StartUP Folder.
Applications (shortcuts) placed in the Folder will be launched when windows is started (when the computer is turned on)

It is not instantaneous, and will be slower on slower machines. Meaning, you likely will still see the windows desktop before the application launches.

HOW

  • Press Windows+R to open the “Run” dialog box.
  • Type “shell:startup” and then hit Enter to open the “Startup” folder.
  • Create a shortcut in the “Startup” folder to any file, folder, or app’s executable file. It will open on startup the next time you boot.

PREVENT USERS ACCESSING WINDOWS
For Commercial Facilities.
It maybe be beneficial to use the Product Launcher and place it in the Startup Folder

The Product Launcher has tools that help obfuscate Windows Access

  • Open the Product Launcher and the ADMIN Tools
  • Turn on “REQUIRE ADMIN PIN”
  • Turn off “ALLOW EXIT”

SUMMARY

  • If you remove the keyboard and mouse form the area (forcing users to interact with the touchscreen only)
  • Prevent users from Accessing the Product Launcher Admin (Setting a PIN)
  • Prevent users from Exiting the Product Launcher

You may(?) minimize the chance of users gaining access to Windows.

NOTE: This does not prevent it...only obfuscates access.
IF you NEED to prevent users access to Windows, you will need to explore 3rd party solutions.

PRO TIP
Prevent users of accessing configuration features of E6 CONNECT

  • Under SETTINGS, turn on the ADMIN tool
